Our Mackenzie William 1896 Riesling is named after our eldest grandson Mack. Our single vineyard Eden Valley Riesling grapes are delicately picked from our longstanding vines planted in the 1960s, 1980s, and from our cherished, deep rooted 1890s vines – believed to be some of, if not the oldest, in Australia. Each batch of fruit bestows its unique attributes, creating quintessential Eden Valley citrus and minerally characters which our region is so well known for, and a complexity that ensures our dry style’s impressive length of finish.
~ Jane Ferrari Tasting Note ~
Lashings of lemon and brown lime with a spike of citrus blossom leap out of the glass to tattoo ‘Eden Valley Riesling’ on your nose; a classic expression of these high country old-timer vines. A continuous stream of fresh squeezed lemon over lime juice slides through an elegant lengthy palate, with a lean and tidy minerally steel dry finish.

It’s the perfect partner for buckets of peel ’n eat prawns with a tangy seafood sauce, or steamed chicken & banana blossom salad, crumbed garfish or King George whiting with chunky potato chips, or XO sauce finished French beans & pork mince.

As quoted by Barossa Wine “Barossa’s 2020 wines will again be sought out early by fans and collectors, with yields tracking below the 10-year average due to temperamental spring weather, and a hot, dry summer.”
Our whole region’s reduced yield was partly due to some interrupted flowering in spring, thanks to some very cold nights and strong winds, followed by extremely hot, dry summer conditions. As in previous years, we focused our attentions on maintaining soil moisture and irrigating before these heatwaves and we fared alright through the hot conditions.
In some areas of Eden Valley, vineyards were down 70-80% (mainly due to lack of water) and in a few cases some vineyards were not even picked at all.
Despite being down 45% on our own normal production levels, our quality this vintage was brilliant.
Winemakers are touting this as another high-quality Barossa vintage.
