2021 On Point Pinot Grigio

“It might say ‘pinot grigio’ on the label, but don’t go a-thinkin’ it’s going to be raspy and lean like a lot of them. To us, the On Point is absolutely that. It’s dry, sure, but also totally delicious and generous in our book. Ultra-juicy and bursting with baked apple and nashi, it reflects what the cooler Eden Valley subregion is capable of. Cleansing, succulent, and dangerously drinkable, it’s refreshing, roaring with flavour, softly spiced, and super sexy with roast pumpkin and herb salad.” ~Yvonne Lorkin~

“One of the first Eden Valley ferments to hit the bottle, the 2021 On Point Pinot Grigio is literally exploding out of the glass! Billowing tropical, floral and citrus aromatics make this a truly ‘scent-sational’ introduction to vintage 2021. A mouthful of zingy ruby grapefruit emerges from the citrus mist, layered over honeyed tropical -almost guava- flavours that seem to keep trundling along to a lovely length, finishing with a zippy little lemon zest kick!” ~Jane Ferrari~

90 points | Wine Pilot | Textbook Grigio fresh-cut apple and pear, with an arresting thread of saline and rock pool aromas. Plenty of refreshing crunchy acidity in the glass will satisfy during those lazy afternoons in the sun.” ~Jeni Port~

2021 Mackenzie William 1896 Riesling

“As a youngster, Eden Valley Riesling is at its absolute best when it lands on your tongue like a lightning bolt of citrusy zip and zing! And that’s exactly what vintage 2021 of the Brockenchack Mackenzie William 1896 Eden Valley Riesling delivers. The flavour ‘spin cycle’ goes on to see-saw between lime and lemon, lemon zest and citrus oil… over a snap, crackle and pop live acid undercarriage, that finishes as clean as a whistle – thanks in a big way to the granite laced dirt that has been supporting these old Riesling vines for 125 years. Brockenchack sits right in the middle of the saddle between Peggy’s Hill and Mt Mckenzie, up there in the Eden Valley high country of the Barossa Ranges, and those cool evenings make all the difference to the volume of aroma and flavour that Brockenchack can trap in the bottle. The Mackenzie William 1896 Eden Valley Riesling is as pretty as a picture when you crack the screw cap – all lemon blossom floating above kaffir lime leaf, layered over something slightly heady that reminds you of a spring garden in full bloom… and that’s even when it’s chilled to bits, straight from the fridge! The combination is extremely impressive and is perfect paired with anything seafoody, Mediterranean or Asian. Or as the ultimate refresher on its own!” ~Jane Ferrari~

92 points | Wine Pilot | There’s a wine tasting term that succinctly sums up one of the big attractions of Eden Valley riesling – line and length. It indicates a strong, structural line of acidity, not hard or aggressive, but naturally endowed, that provides the tension between fruit and acidity that drives the wine long.” ~Jeni Port~

2018 Charli Jaye Chardonnay

Our fourth incarnation of Eden Valley Chardonnay stays true to our philosophy of seeking elegance and was subsequently awarded a gold medal at the 2020 Melbourne International Wine Competition. 93 points National Liquor News | March 2021 edition | “Deliciously moreish. Complex butterscotch and vanilla, silky over generous citrus flavours. Finishes clean and refreshing, ready for a second sip.” ~Michael Mcintosh~

“Light green tinged pale straw in colour. The perfumed lift of pears, apples and vanilla bean nougat set the aromatics bar high with this Eden Valley Chardonnay, grown in the rugged Eastern Barossa Ranges near Peggy’s Hill. The streamlined sleek elegant palate has a clean steel acid thread running through seamless layers of pear apple fruit and bright spice oak, with an extended line and length to a very tidy finish.” ~Jane Ferrari~

2021 vintage : Winter rainfall took some of the sting out the dry summer conditions. Mild temps for much of the growing season provided ideal conditions for growth and berry development. Uninterrupted flowering allowed good fruit set. Night temps were cooler than normal in Spring and Summer; these cooler nights critical to, and the hallmark for, the quality of grapes and wines from our Eden Valley vineyard, allowing our vines time to rest, and allowing aromatic flavours, finesse and natural acidity to be maintained. Mild daytime conditions provided optimal ripening, allowing great fruit flavours to develop. Quality is exceptional from our 2021 Eden Valley vintage. Whites are fine with amazing natural acid and intense flavours. Reds are flavourful and deeply coloured. A vintage for now, and for the long term.

2018 vintage : The growing season in Eden Valley started off well, with winter 2017 rainfall up slightly higher than average. In spring, drier soils combined with warmer than average spring days meant the vine canopies grew quickly; flowering well and setting a good number of bunches. Summer rainfall for us was down on average. January and February were warm and dry, with very warm temperatures in February slowing down the pace of ripening. With the lower summer rainfall, growers with access to water, soil moisture monitoring, good irrigation management and healthy soils experienced less stress – and subsequently delivered sound fruit and consistent yields. These are all practices that Brockenchack invest heavily into. The Indian summer of March and early April was what some people are calling ‘the icing on the cake’, with average temperatures, without extremes. Overall a strong, healthy crop for us with our Chardonnay grapes being picked around the middle of March.
