2021 Mackenzie William 1896 Riesling

Our Mackenzie William Riesling is named after our grandson Mack. Our estate grown single vineyard Eden Valley Riesling grapes are delicately picked from our longstanding vines planted in the 1960s, 1980s, and from our cherished, deep rooted 1890s vines – believed to be some of the oldest in Australia. Each batch of fruit bestows its unique attributes, creating quintessential Eden Valley citrus and minerally characters which our region is so well known for, and a complexity that ensures our dry style’s impressive length of finish.

“As pretty as a picture upon opening…. all lemon blossom floating above kaffir lime leaf, layered over something slightly heady that reminds you of a spring garden in full bloom… and that’s even when it’s chilled to bits, straight from the fridge! In its youth, Eden Valley Riesling is at its absolute best when it lands on your tongue like a lightning bolt of citrusy zip and zing!  And that’s exactly what the 2021 vintage of the Brockenchack Mackenzie William 1896 Eden Valley Riesling delivers. The flavour ‘spin cycle’ goes on to see-saw between lime and lemon, lemon zest and citrus oil… over a snap, crackle and pop live acid undercarriage that finishes as clean as a whistle – thanks in a big way to the granite laced dirt that has been supporting these old Riesling vines for 125 years.

Brockenchack sits right in the middle of the saddle between Peggy’s Hill and Mt Mckenzie, up there in the Eden Valley high country of the Barossa Ranges, and those cool evenings make all the difference to the volume of aroma and flavour that Brockenchack can trap in the bottle.”

2021 Tru-Su Rose

Our 2021 Rosé seems to have just ‘kissed the skins’ to pick up its unique vivid coral peach skin pinks, but has had enough contact to catch a bagful of bright aroma flavour combinations. Live juiced raspberry-cherry aromatics spiral from the glass with rose petal lift, over a spicy toffee apple back note, then the Tru-Su Rosé flavours bounce onto your palate with a splosh of raspberry velvet, snowballing on through ripe red cherries, to a fresh apple acid full stop.

Our Tru-Su dry Rosé is and made from 100% Shiraz grapes, grown on our own Eden Valley vineyard in the Barossa. It is named after Trudi and Susan – the two daughters of Brockenchack founders Trevor and Marilyn, who enjoy this style of wine.

2018 Zip Line Shiraz

Our Zip Line Shiraz is named after the zip line cable at our vineyard which generates endless laughter for all generations of the family – and much like this wine, it’s a smooth ride to the end. Our Zip Line Shiraz is made from our Eden Valley single vineyard Shiraz grapes, plucked from a combination of our older vines with an average vine age of 60 years, to give depth and complexity, and from our younger vines planted in 2008, to give fruit freshness and vibrancy. Whole berries spend 7 days on skins in open-top fermenters before being pressed and left to mature in a mix of new and old and French oak for approximately 15 months. Vibrant upon release, this wine will easily mature for 8 to 10 years to come.

“Fabulously elegant and delicately fragrant, showing lime/lemon zest, Granny Smith apple and floral aromas, leading to a linear palate that’s juicy and beautifully focused. 92 Points | Winepilot – Jeni Port

“There’s a wine tasting term that succinctly sums up one of the big attractions of Eden Valley riesling – line and length. It indicates a strong, structural line of acidity, not hard or aggressive but naturally endowed that provides the tension between fruit and acidity that drives the wine long.”

2021 Tru-Su Rose

93 Points | Wine Orbit – Sam Kim

“This is brightly expressed and instantly appealing with ripe nectarine, red apple and floral aromas with a hint of sweet raspberry. The palate light and vibrant displaying juicy fruit flavours together with crisp acidity, finishing lingering and refreshing. At its best: now to 2023.” ~Sam Kim, April 2022~

“Here’s a shout out to all the gemologists in the house. This wine could absolutely be a liquid Padparadscha Sapphire amirite? It’s the rarest, most beautiful of all sapphires and famous for its pinky-sunset colour. Named after Trudi and Susan, daughters of Brockenchack’s owners Marilyn and Trevor Harch, this rosé looks like it’ll be lolly-like, but no. It’s dry dry dry people. You’ll feel parched just looking at it! Sipping it reveals mouthfilling, zesty textures, an edge of blackcurrant and it’s wicked with watermelon and lime salad.” ~Yvonne Lorkin~

2018 Zip Line Shiraz

Top 10 + 4.5 Stars | NZ Dish Magazine – Best Aussie Shiraz in NZ Tasting ~March 2022~

With its sweet vanillin oak, dark berry intensity, tobacco and roast plum complexity, this shiraz impressed straight away. “Fresh, lovely palate weight and very, very well made,” noted Cameron. “With berry blossoms on the nose, a gently plump, plummy palate and tannins prickling under your front lip, it’s rather fabulous.” ageed Yvonne Lorkin.

2021 vintage : Winter rainfall took some of the sting out the dry summer conditions. Mild temps for much of the growing season provided ideal conditions for growth and berry development. Uninterrupted flowering allowed good fruit set. Night temps were cooler than normal in Spring and Summer; these cooler nights critical to, and the hallmark for, the quality of grapes and wines from our Eden Valley vineyard, allowing our vines time to rest, and allowing aromatic flavours, finesse and natural acidity to be maintained. Mild daytime conditions provided optimal ripening, allowing great fruit flavours to develop. Quality is exceptional from our 2021 Eden Valley vintage. Whites are fine with amazing natural acid and intense flavours. Reds are flavourful and deeply coloured. A vintage for now, and for the long term.

2018 vintage: Our Eden Valley growing season started off well, with winter rainfall higher than average. In spring, drier soils combined with warmer than average spring days, meant the vine canopies grew quickly; flowering well and setting a good number of bunches. Summer rainfall was down on average and Jan and Feby were warm and dry, with very warm temps in February slowing down the pace of ripening. With the lower summer rainfall, growers with access to water, soil moisture monitoring, good irrigation management and healthy soils experienced less stress – and subsequently delivered sound fruit and consistent yields. These are all practices that Brockenchack invest heavily into. The Indian summer of March and early April were referred to as ‘the icing on the cake’, delivering average temps, without extremes. Overall a strong, healthy crop for us. We are delighted with the high-quality grapes and great yields this vintage delivered. The colours and flavours in our reds are exciting and the high level of natural acids in our whites reflect our great Eden Valley characteristics. Standout varieties for our region this year include Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet. We are very excited for the release of our ’18 reds in a few years’ time.
