Our 2020 Pinot Noir boasts a vibrant garnet colour that entices the senses. Delightful aromas of freshly picked cherries and raspberries lift from the glass, inviting you in.
Exquisite flavours of cranberry, cherry, and plum open up on the palate, earthy notes complement these fruit flavours with an excellent balance from fine oak and long, caressing silk tannins.
There’s some wonderful savoury notes in the shadows and restrained power is evident in the finishing length. Time spent in a decanter will bring out a raft of strawberry notes and linear grip.
Our Pinot Noir journey began in 2012 with the planting of our first Pinot vines, taking advantage of the coolest patches in our vineyard. Pinot Noir is not typically grown in our region, but we just had a feeling it could be something special. We set out with a vision to deliver a beautiful and elegant expression of Eden Valley Pinot Noir, and believe this is exactly what we have achieved. A portion of our Pinot vines are planted at the highest point on our vineyard, sitting at approximately 480m above sea level, with the remaining planted in the two coolest spots in slightly lower parts of our vineyard, at an altitude of around 450m (Central Otago is around 300m).
Hare hunting has been a much enjoyed pastime for our two (now-adult) grandsons. While their skills have since been well-honed over the years, as young lads, despite their best efforts, the hares in our Pinot patch always managed to elude them, which is how this wine earned its name.

“Juicy, powerful style. Soft supple fruits, rich on the palate, lots of fruit, medium plus finish, concentration, herbs. It holds it all together well. Balanced on a knife-edge. Good wine.”

2020 Vintage Summary:
As quoted by Barossa Wine “Barossa’s 2020 wines will again be sought out early by fans and collectors, with yields tracking below the 10-year average due to temperamental spring weather, and a hot, dry summer.”
Our whole region’s reduced yield is partly due to some interrupted flowering in spring, thanks to some very cold nights and strong winds, followed by extremely hot, dry summer conditions. As in previous years, we focussed our attentions on maintaining soil moisture and irrigating before these heatwaves and we fared alright through the hot conditions.
In some areas of Eden Valley, vineyards were down 70-80% (mainly due to lack of water) and in a few cases some vineyards were not even picked at all.
Despite being down 45% on our own normal production levels, our quality is brilliant.
Winemakers are touting this as another high-quality Barossa vintage.
We’ve had one of the best starts to a new vintage (2021) for many years, with good rains through April and early May – things are looking good and all we need is some follow up rain with good run off to refill the dams a little and the weather experts are saying we’re in for a better than average winter with good rains for this part of Australia.
