This out of the box Eden Valley Cabernet is named ‘D.E.N’ in dedication to Darren Edward Naylor, a passionate and integral part of our Brockenchack family. Father to our grandchildren Mackenzie and Bronte, Darren’s unwavering devotion to his family and our family business are second to none. As our global wine ambassador Darren dedicates his time to sharing our family stories around the world and rises to every occasion with sincerity and charm. As Cabernet is Darren’s favourite wine style, we felt it only fitting to name this Reserve edition after him, in thanks for his tireless efforts in building our family’s legacy.

Our 2021 D.E.N Reserve Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is as bright as ever, with deep crimson tones and effortless aromas of dark berries, fine French oak and ripe coffee beans.

A hand-woven quilt of fresh black currant and cassis flavours excite every taste bud with generous serves of succulent natural berry flavour, with cocoa and a tiny dash of mint driven beautifully by the grippy tannins that lend an excellent savoury note to the fine long finish.

Decanting is highly recommended for maximum reward, although bountiful ripe flavours are there for the taking, and are certainly willing to open up gracefully over many years.

History of Achievement:

2020 | 91 Points | 2023 VinoUS | “The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon D.E.N. Reserve is gently aromatic, displaying restrained dried herbs and cedar notes against cassis. Quality oak lingers in the background. Compact but firm, with a bone-dry muscular swagger, it is pretty tightly wound, although structurally sound with a strong line of dried herb flavours and ample coffee grounds and oak. It’s a keeper and needs little time to get into the groove.”

2019 | Gold – 2022 Melbourne International Wine Competition

2019 | Silver – 2023 London Wine Competition | “Beautiful fruit and great structure. Dense garnet. Broad accomplished evolving blackcurrant core by integrating oak. Full-bodied, moderate vibrant acidity, fine high dense tannins, driven mid-palate, long impressive.”

2018 | Gold – 2021 Melbourne International Wine Competition

2018 | Silver – 2022 London Wine Competition | Elegant, powerful character with soft tannins, medium acidity and aromas of jammy plums, chocolate, coffee, blackcurrant and dried mint. Concentrated palate with jammy blackberries, cocoa and an integrated finish”

2018 | Silver – 2022 International Wine Competition | “Plenty of black fruit, both currant and berry. Floral notes with firm structure and very impressive length.”

2021 Vintage Report

Winter rainfall in Eden was only 5% below average, with August being the wettest month for the winter period, filling our dams which we were oh so grateful for, because from November, dry conditions ensued. Growing season rainfall (Oct-Mar) was 20% below average with only February recording above average rainfall.

Temperatures were relatively mild for much of the growing season, providing ideal conditions for growth and berry development. Flowering was uninterrupted this year, allowing good fruit set.

Night-time temps during spring and summer were cooler than normal. These cooler nights are critical to, and the hallmark for, the quality of grapes and wines from our Eden Valley vineyard, allowing our vines time to rest, and allowing aromatic flavours, finesse and natural acidity to be maintained.

The mild daytime conditions provided optimal ripening, allowing great fruit flavours to develop.

Whilst yields across the region varied depending on water supply, they were mostly higher than vintage 2020, which is the case with your 2021 crop.

Quality is exceptional from our 2021 Eden Valley vintage. Whites are fine with amazing natural acid and intense flavours. Reds are flavourful and deeply coloured. A vintage for now, and for the long term.
