2 points off perfection… we’ll take it! This is your chance to secure the very last of our 98 point Riesling here in New Zealand. Drink some now. Cellar some up till 2032 for a gorgeous aged Riesling.

Delicately picked from our longstanding vines planted in the 1960s, and 1980s, and from our cherished, deep-rooted 1890s vines – believed to be some of (if not) the oldest in Australia. Each batch of fruit bestows its unique attributes, creating quintessential Eden Valley citrus and minerally characteristics, and a complexity that ensures our dry style’s impressive length of finish.

Our 2022 Mackenzie William exhibits all the aromatic citrus finery that Eden Valley Riesling is so well known for. Generously lengthy zesty citrus flavours are forthcoming, with a spritz of orange oil, while the mineral backbone and soft natural acidity work together for a most flavoursome and satisfying mouthfeel for this dry style Riesling.

Our Mackenzie William Riesling is named after our eldest grandson Mack. He is mature beyond his years, complex and resilient – much like this wine.

Our Riesling is made in an easily approachable style upon release, but can also be enjoyed any time within the following decade. Thanks to its natural acidity and minerality, this wine will age gracefully for a decade or more under the right cellaring conditions – for those of us who enjoy the toast and honey notes of an aged Riesling.

Our 2022 harvest felt quite drawn out, but funnily enough, it was not as long as the year prior, which took place over nine weeks. This year was only six.

Our 2022 vintage was set up really well with good rain through winter and spring in 2021, to replenish soil moisture after a particularly dry Autumn. And despite the challenges of hailstorms in October 2021; reducing our healthy young shoots to shreds, the vineyard has pulled off an amazing feat. The fruit we have produced is a testament to the arduous work our viticulture team put in year-round and especially off the back of the storms. At the time we thought we had lost it all… Outside of the storms, the shoots regrew, albeit delayed. We didn’t experience intense heat over summer, which didn’t assist the vines, nor fruit in catching up, however the wait was worth it!

Harvest officially started on Wednesday 23rd March, under overcast skies we picked our Riesling for Mack’s 1896 Riesling. Another two weeks later, our Pinot Gris for our fan favourite On Point Pinot Grigio was picked on a 24 degree Autumn day. Easter was spent recovering from picking some superb Shiraz, and under the cover of darkness we picked our Chardonnay -our last white variety- and a small parcel of Pinot Noir on ANZAC Day.

At the end of April, we had unexpected rain overnight, but luckily it didn’t put a dampener on things. We picked a little Shiraz from our stunning old vines on the home block, in front of the homestead. Fast forward to Tuesday 3 May and our fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon from our Gunyah block in front of the cellar door came in, as well as our special Grenache. This will be hot property, as while the fruit was outstanding, there isn’t a lot of it. From there it was over to the winery to guide our beautiful fruit from vine to the wine – in the styles you and I have come to know and love.

The team has done a fantastic job of bouncing back from the challenges of this vintage. I am confident the wine will be superb, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
