“A Grenache which has attracted positive attention in various wine shows, this is named after a member of their team. It is the third release of Grenache for the winery, all from a single vineyard in the Eden Valley, and crafted by winemaker Joanne Irvine (daughter of winemaking royalty, James Irvine). The yields with this vintage were lower than average, resulting in wines of serious concentration. Crimson/purple in colour, this was my favourite of the releases, a really well made, delicious Grenache. Nose of raspberries, bergamot, dry herbs, red cherries and florals. Balanced, with excellent focus and serious length through to very fine tannins, all backed by underlying acidity. A delicious, juicy example of Grenache that drinks beautifully now and should age well for another 6-8 years. “From a single vineyard planted in 2012 in the Eden Valley, this is named after the family’s eldest granddaughter, Bronte. It has done extremely well in wine shows around the world. Cracking value for a wine which will easily sail through a decade in the cellar. Dark purple in colour; the aromas are a blend of cassis, plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, cigar box, spices and black olives. There is some oak evident but the integration is good and progressing well. Good balance and excellent length, right through to the firm but satiny tannins. Like most of the wines in this release, a highlight is good fruit focus. Drinking this now is fine, but it will age and improve over the next six to ten years. Drink to 2031.”

Founded by Trevor and Marilyn Harch, this snappy-dry riesling is named after their eldest grandson Mack and the fact that vines have been growing in their little corner of the Barossa since the late 19th century. It rolls with clean lime and apple notes, quartzy mineral layers, green pear and lemon pith layers across the nose and palate. The textures on the finish are prickly-fresh and feisty.”

“After meeting the team @brockenchackwines recently I was blown away with how advanced their wines were. In particular the 2017 Mackenzie William 1869 Riesling. You’d be hard pressed to guess that this was a 2017 Riesling. It doesn’t have that acidic and citric sharpness that was expected, and that’s just one reason I love it. More lemon than lime, balanced nectarines and a nice little flinty finish. The most amazing thing about this cracking wine is that as well as it is right now, it’s only going to get better for the next 10+ years. Oh and if you think the name is a little different read the story on the website. It’s why I love family produced wines. All blood, sweat and cheers.”

It’s ultra-fresh, frisky and fanging (technical term) with cocoa and smoke and layers of liquorice to finish. Beautiful drinking now, but if you’re disciplined enough, this shiraz will seriously reward another six or seven years in the cellar very nicely indeed.”

Good acidity, focus and length, this wine has a good decade or more ahead of it and while pleasing now, is going to get considerably better. Richly flavoured, this is a fine Barossa Shiraz. “Here in Kiwiland we call a ‘zip line’ a ‘flying fox’ because we all feel a bit foxier when we’re hurtling at speed hanging from a wire contraption with certain death or disability resulting if we let go right? Nothing sexier. Except perhaps this wine. Spicy, sultana cake aromatics envelop the nose, followed by a rich, warming, woolly mouthfeel.  It’s an exotic-yet-home-comfort example that’ll reward anyone praying for blackcurrant, pepper, eucalypt and cocoa in their sipping.  Lush and lovely when savoured with old-fashioned, peppery Shepherd’s Pie.”

“This delicious ‘spurgles’ (sparkling Shiraz) has been made as a tribute to Scott Pollock, a beloved member of the family and son-in-law to the owners, Trevor and Marilyn Harch. This was apparently a style much loved by Scott and one suspects that he would have been very happy with this wine. Made from Eden Valley fruit, sourced from a single vineyard, this is excellent value for the style. It opens with exploding pink foam before subsiding into a lovely crimson note. Hedonistic and plush, there are alluring notes of plums, ripe cherries, dark chocolate, cloves, leather, blackcurrants and red currants; ripe and full-flavoured. There is excellent length here, and balance. Normally, these have reasonable levels of sweetness but here, although there appears to be pleasing fruit sweetness, the fermentation is close to dry. It works. Has been stoppered with a crown seal – expect to see more of this. Drink to 2026.”

Plush, lush and licked with peppercorn and soft spices, it’s a fresh, clean rosé with excellent length of flavour.”
