Nine years on from harvest and this shiraz is maturing into something rather special. “With its smoky, vanilla oak and soft, suede-like textures cloaking its toffee, coffee and dark, charred fruit notes, it’s still carrying fresh acidity and buckets of character. 2020 D.E.N Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

91 Points | Vinous – Angus Hughson

The 2020 D.E.N Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is gently aromatic, displaying restrained dried herbs and cedar notes against cassis. Quality oak lingers in the background. Compact but firm, with a bone-dry muscular swagger, it is pretty tightly wound, although structurally sound with a strong line of dried herb flavours and ample coffee grounds and oak. It’s a keeper and needs little time to get into the groove. Drinking window 2025-2030.” ~Oct 2023~

“Richly fruited and seductively fragrant, the bouquet shows blackberry, cake spice, cedar and dark chocolate characters. It’s equally satisfying in the mouth, delivering outstanding weight and richly textured mouthfeel, superbly complemented by refreshing acidity and layers of fine tannins. Sumptuous yet refined and sophisticated.” ~Jun 2023~

95 Points | Winepilot – Angus Hughson

“I like the Brockenchack wines – honest and well made with plenty of personality and flavour, but I really loved this wine. It’s their best yet from where I sit! Bright deep crimson, it is a beautifully brooding and tightly knit Eden Valley Shiraz with a powerful aromatic core of blackberry, new leather and black olive fruits with peppery sage elements and well matched oak. Dry, fleshy and concentrated on the palate, there is an explosion of punchy fruit pastilles and liquorice while retaining its energy and freshness with moderate, fine tannins well integrated to provide a long, yet subtle finish. Superb Eden Valley Shiraz and great value.” ~March 2022~

95 Points | Winepilot – Ken Gargett

Dark maroon in colour, there is real depth of flavour here. Dark berries, animal skins, warm earth, hints of chocolate, black fruits and a smoky roast meat note. Black olives and cloves follow. Firm tannins are present, good balance and excellent length. This is cracking stuff and has at least a decade ahead of it. That said, no reason you can’t enjoy it now.” ~Mar 2022~

90 Points | The Real Review – Bob Campbell

Intense wine with cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, chocolate/mocha flavours and port-like concentration. An heroic red that is accessible now but should develop well with bottle age. Drink to 2027.” ~Feb 2023~

Review | By The Glass – Yvonne Lorkin

“5 stars. Made from 54yo grapevines by the ultra-talented Joanne Irvine, Brockenchack’s flagship shiraz is named after the grandson of founders Trevor and Marilyn Harch. Jack is the company viticulturist and is training to become their future winemaker. So no pressure then! Put all your thoughts of shiraz being jammy, sweet and cuddly aside because the Jack Harrison is an exercise in muscular elegance. With skyscraper structure, a core of dark blue and black fruits, charred oak, cocoa and dried herbs, this shiraz is iron fist in velvet glove material. If you drink it now, make sure you get out the good, swirlable glasses and decant if you can. Otherwise, tuck it away until 2033 if you’re disciplined enough.”

Review | New Zealand Wine Directory – JB

“Dark cherry / purple almost black in colour, lighter at the rim, a full-bodied wine. In the nose dark cherry, plums, baking spices, vanilla a subtle earthy / meaty note. Huge, weighty mouth-filling palate with concentrated flavours of ripe cherry, plum, blackberries & pepper / spice, chalky tannins, a soft acidity & fine textured oak influence. A good whack of alcohol at 15% all melded together into a multi layered, textural wine with power, depth & length. Outstanding! My thanks to the team at Brockenchack for the opportunity to taste these exceptional wines of Australia.”

Taking you on a journey that starts light, delicate and breezy. An initial pop of cherry, raspberry, blood orange and bergamot starts to develop deeper spice, nougat and phenolic tang. Lovely, svelte tannin and a swell of acidity as the wine intensifies and gets more torque through the palate. A lush, polished finish, with super length. ~Jul 2023~

Delicately scented grenache with gentle berry fruit aromas that continue on to the palate where they are joined by nuances of savoury and spice. Charming wine with a silken texture and gently drying finish. Drink between 2023 – 2028. ~Jun 2023~

Review | By The Glass – Yvonne Lorkin

“4 stars. In a nod to New Zealand-based team member Megan McMurdo, this grenache is a vibrant, grin-inducing yet soothing wine that reliably over-delivers vintage after vintage. Bursting with cherry and blueberry aromatics, dark plum and cocoa characters and soft peppery textures, it’s a plush, comfy wine that’s perfectly suited to casseroles or an exotic osso bucco. Fruity and spice-stacked.”

Review | New Zealand Wine Directory – JB

“Bright ruby to cherry red in colour, lighter at the rim, medium bodied wine. A lovely floral & fruity nose of raspberry & blackberry aromas, spice & nutty notes. Full flavoured palate, with lots of dark berries, raspberry & cherry fruit flavours, a lively acidity, light but grippy tannins, a savoury element with subtle spice & toasty nutty oak. Long concentrated dry finish with warmth at 14.5% abv. A lush beautifully integrated & very tasty wine.”

A Grenache which has attracted positive attention in various wine shows, this is named after a member of their team. It is the third release of Grenache for the winery, all from a single vineyard in the Eden Valley, and crafted by winemaker Joanne Irvine (daughter of winemaking royalty, James Irvine). The yields with this vintage were lower than average, resulting in wines of serious concentration. Crimson/purple in colour, this was my favourite of the releases, a really well made, delicious Grenache. Nose of raspberries, bergamot, dry herbs, red cherries and florals. Balanced, with excellent focus and serious length through to very fine tannins, all backed by underlying acidity. A delicious, juicy example of Grenache that drinks beautifully now and should age well for another 6-8 years. Their suggestion is that if the day warrants it, 30 minutes in the fridge will assist, is not out of place. Drink to 2029.” ~Feb 2023~

# 2 and Top Grenache in Top 10 Tasting of Single Varietal Australian Reds | Winefolio – David Walker Bell

Starting bright, delicate and jazzy – light on its feet. The nose of cherry, rosehip and rose petal, plus raspberry, mandarin and cherry blossom. A juicy and racy entry to the palate, with vibrant acidity. Tannins emerge further back as intensity builds, and now there is more weight and focus. Sarsparilla and flush of supple tannin and pithy phenolics. Love these wines that change in your glass – each sip is different, and this gave us more discussion than any wine I can recall in months. Our top Grenache.” ~Oct 2022~

A dark ruby-burgundy in the glass, with a coltish, succulent perfume. Plum, bramble and cherry meet dried herb and savoury notes of mushroom, burdock, salami and peat. The palate delights with a lighter tone then the nose suggests – flowing acidity and supple, chalky tannins form the core, but the dark fruits persist and the whole is very well balanced. Spice builds and the oak plays off that, with a toasty, exotic note of incense and cedar. A generous, lingering finish.” ~Jul 2023~

“A bright medium-depth ruby in the glass. Lovely nose, filled with savoury notes of mushroom, beetroot and mocha, alongside some succulent blackberry, damson, blood orange and red cherry. A youthful, balsamic, juiciness to the palate – a little lighter in tone than the nose suggests. The fruit has a bounce and pop of ripeness, which is a foil to the savoury, peaty elements and the supple, dry, tannins. A moderate acidity keeps things moving, and the rounded, silken texture enriches the back of the palate. Powerful, perfumed and well-balanced – a well made, elegant yet vibrant expression.” ~November 2022~

Colour is gold and straw. A lovely aromatic nose with good oak integration. Stonefruit, nutmeg and ginger here. Some tropical touches. Those who don’t mind a touch of oak, and there are plenty of fans of that style out there, will love this riper style. Richly flavoured and stonefruit notes really emerge on the palate with orange rind and quince. Quite delicious. Drink over the next two to three years. Really enjoyed this. Bright pale straw in colour, this is a well composed cooler climate Chardonnay that is quite floral in character with layers of ripe nectarine and melon aromas wound up in a cloak of cashew barrel ferment and oak maturation – all well integrated. It’s a tangy little number too with upfront impact thanks to that juicy acidity; layers of tinned peach fruit and spicy oak coming together to deliver what is a top-knotch version of Eden Valley Chardonnay.” ~Mar 2022~

From a single vineyard planted in 2012 in the Eden Valley, this is named after the family’s eldest granddaughter, Bronte. It has done extremely well in wine shows around the world. Cracking value for a wine which will easily sail through a decade in the cellar. Dark purple in colour; the aromas are a blend of cassis, plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, cigar box, spices and black olives. There is some oak evident but the integration is good and progressing well. Good balance and excellent length, right through to the firm but satiny tannins. Like most of the wines in this release, a highlight is good fruit focus. Drinking this now is fine, but it will age and improve over the next six to ten years. Drink to 2031.”

A killer nose of orchard fruits and breezy florals. Very dry and yet with such spicy, mouth-watering fruit. It is both tight and structured, and yet jazzy and free-flowing at the same time; the two things creating a real energy and brio through the palate. Acidity is brisk and gives great direction and length through the mound of citrus, ginger, mandarin and apple flavours. Potential for cellaring and development here.” ~Jul 2023~

“The 2022 Mackenzie William 1896 is a single vineyard Riesling, crafted with the fruit from a vineyard planted in 1896. It offers piercing grapefruit and lime juice aromas with a subtle mineral backing. It’s bright, fresh and vibrant, bursting with youthful intensity. The finely balanced palate combines zesty acidity with an array of citrus and floral complexity. Tightly wound, with an appealing texture, it promises to drink well over the next decade. Drinking window 2025-2033.” ~Jun 2023~

Review | By The Glass – Yvonne Lorkin

“4 stars. Founded by Trevor and Marilyn Harch, this snappy-dry riesling is named after their eldest grandson Mack and the fact that vines have been growing in their little corner of the Barossa since the late 19th century. It rolls with clean lime and apple notes, quartzy mineral layers, green pear and lemon pith layers across the nose and palate. The textures on the finish are prickly-fresh and feisty.”

Review | New Zealand Wine Directory – JB

“Crystal clear very pale straw coloured with the faintest of green hues. In the nose, fresh lemon & lime citrus aromas then a subtle wet-stone minerality. The palate is textural with a little grip & a zesty acid backbone, concentrated lemon / lime citrus & crisp green apple flavours all result in a long mouth-watering but bone dry finish. Love to see again with a few years aging. Excellent.”

“Fabulously elegant and delicately fragrant, showing lime/lemon zest, Granny Smith apple and floral aromas, leading to a linear palate that’s juicy and beautifully focused. Wonderfully structured by firm acidity, finishing impressively long and mouth-watering. At its best: 2023 to 2033.” ~Apr 2022~

Eden Valley is a celebrated region for riesling. The high, cool hills deliver a particularly individual style. It’s like a big bouquet of flowers arrived in the glass. Mackenzie William has it and then some; apple blossom, jasmine, citrus, lime and orchard aromatics lead the way. It captures the essence of Spring. There’s a wine tasting term that succinctly sums up one of the big attractions of Eden Valley riesling – line and length. It indicates a strong, structural line of acidity, not hard or aggressive but naturally endowed that provides the tension between fruit and acidity that drives the wine long. It’s here in this wine, and together with the aromatics, the fineness of citrus fruit – but it’s early days, still in building mode, Mackenzie William can look forward to a fruitful, long life in the bottle. Drink to 2030.”

“After meeting the team @brockenchackwines recently I was blown away with how advanced their wines were. In particular the 2017 Mackenzie William 1869 Riesling. You’d be hard pressed to guess that this was a 2017 Riesling. It doesn’t have that acidic and citric sharpness that was expected, and that’s just one reason I love it. More lemon than lime, balanced nectarines and a nice little flinty finish. The most amazing thing about this cracking wine is that as well as it is right now, it’s only going to get better for the next 10+ years. Oh and if you think the name is a little different read the story on the website. It’s why I love family produced wines. All blood, sweat and cheers.”

“There’s always a great deal of interest in how the new vintage Rieslings express their range of florals and citrus flavours. Here we are immediately in pretty perfumed talc territory, white blossoms as well as well-sculpted, tight apple and lemon-like flavours – with what’s increasingly looking like a vintage-specific softer and fleshier acidity. There’s also a refreshing lemon ice-block-like feel.”

“Wonderfully ripe and inviting, the wine shows Black Doris plum, blackberry, cedary oak, vanilla and toasted spice aromas, followed by a flavoursome palate offering excellent weight and velvety texture. Upfront and fabulously expressed, making it highly enjoyable.” ~Jun 2023~

This single vineyard 2020 Zip Line Shiraz from Eden Valley offers impressive quality for the price, thanks to its mix of dense fruit and underlying complexity. It stands up to deliver ample blackberry, chocolate and new leather aromas, with nice touchers of earth and dried herbs, a hearty serve of oak only adding to the experience. Moderately intense, gently opulent mouth-filling flavours follow with layers of fruit pastille and plum compote topped by a nice touch of spice. Tannins are already well integrated and help to deliver a generous finish. Drinking window 2023-2030.” ~Jun 2023~

A deep, brooding purple in the glass, with plump, robust aromas of damson, boysenberry, blueberry muffin, peppercorn, mocha and cloves. Great balance of acidity, a char of toasty oak and chewy tannin. Great varietal typicity and true to the rich, ripe Barossa style – there’s mint, liquorice and earthiness in the mix; and the finish is softly textured, inkily rich and easy to like.” ~Jul 2023~

Review | By The Glass – Yvonne Lorkin

“4.5 stars. Ripe, spice-stacked, and showing seams of peppercorn and cocoa, this new vintage of one of my favourite new Eden Valley discoveries, has a shed-tonne of flavour and texture circling a core of bright boysenberry and blackcurrant. It’s ultra-fresh, frisky and fanging (technical term) with cocoa and smoke and layers of liquorice to finish. Beautiful drinking now, but if you’re disciplined enough, this shiraz will seriously reward another six or seven years in the cellar very nicely indeed.”

Review | New Zealand Wine Directory – JB

“Deep cherry red / crimson coloured, medium bodied wine. Fragrant enticing nose of ripe plum, blackberry & cherry aromas a hint of spice & a savoury herbal note. The palate begins with gorgeous silky tannins, a bright acidity & fine oak textural elements, then juicy cherry, plum & dark berry fruit flavours, subtle spice & a long intense warm finish. An excellent weighty wine with depth & character.”

With its sweet vanillin oak, dark berry intensity, tobacco and roast plum complexity, this shiraz impressed straight away. “Fresh, lovely palate weight and very, very well made,” noted Cameron. “With berry blossoms on the nose, a gently plump, plummy palate and tannins prickling under your front lip, it’s rather fabulous.” agreed Yvonne Lorkin.

From a single vineyard in the Eden Valley, this is an opaque black/purple in colour. The nose, coiled and intense, gives up plums, black cherries, chocolate, coffee beans and mocha. The palate adds leather and cloves and, towards the finish, some sour cherries. Good acidity, focus and length, this wine has a good decade or more ahead of it and while pleasing now, is going to get considerably better. Richly flavoured, this is a fine Barossa Shiraz. Drink to 2034.”

“Bramble, white pepper, christmas cake, eucalypt, plum and vanilla on the nose. Concentrated and elegant, staying taut and linear into the palate. “Here in Kiwiland we call a ‘zip line’ a ‘flying fox’ because we all feel a bit foxier when we’re hurtling at speed hanging from a wire contraption with certain death or disability resulting if we let go right? Nothing sexier. Except perhaps this wine. Spicy, sultana cake aromatics envelop the nose, followed by a rich, warming, woolly mouthfeel.  It’s an exotic-yet-home-comfort example that’ll reward anyone praying for blackcurrant, pepper, eucalypt and cocoa in their sipping.  Lush and lovely when savoured with old-fashioned, peppery Shepherd’s Pie.”

GREAT SCOTT SPARKLING SHIRZ

“This delicious ‘spurgles’ (sparkling Shiraz) has been made as a tribute to Scott Pollock, a beloved member of the family and son-in-law to the owners, Trevor and Marilyn Harch. This was apparently a style much loved by Scott and one suspects that he would have been very happy with this wine. Made from Eden Valley fruit, sourced from a single vineyard, this is excellent value for the style. It opens with exploding pink foam before subsiding into a lovely crimson note. Hedonistic and plush, there are alluring notes of plums, ripe cherries, dark chocolate, cloves, leather, blackcurrants and red currants; ripe and full-flavoured. There is excellent length here, and balance. Normally, these have reasonable levels of sweetness but here, although there appears to be pleasing fruit sweetness, the fermentation is close to dry. It works. Has been stoppered with a crown seal – expect to see more of this. Drink to 2026.”

“Great Scott Sparkling Shiraz, a non vintage version of the Zip Line Shiraz, made in the Charmat method, with just a little port added. Unusual but really rather good. A frothy pink in the glass, with spice and red fruit aromas bursting from the glass. Cinnamon, blueberry, rosehip and freesia. The palate is surprisingly dry – full but well-balanced, with lovely ripe cherry flavours and sweetness… but with a dryness that makes it very more-ish. I like this.” ~Sep 2022~

“Bright ruby to raspberry-red in colour, fluffy mouse of tiny bubbles in the glass on pouring. Aromas of cherry, dark plum, red berry & spice in the nose. On the palate, a ‘wee spritz’ on the tongue, then ripe fruit flavours reflecting the nose, velvety, sweet, spice, cocoa but it’s dry at the same time. Shiraz made in the Charmat method, in-tank fermentation then bottled under crown cap closure. Quite delicious & an enjoyable change of wine style. Tasted slightly chilled.”

A single vineyard wine, made from Shiraz. A pale rose petal pink in the glass, with aromas of raspberry, melon, apple and jasmine florals. Bright, elegant and polished into the palate, where a buoyant acidity highlights the juicy fruit. Spice and a little fruit tannin add complexity, but it’s not a difficult or intellectual wine – just open and enjoy, with lunch or as an aperitif.” ~Jul 2023~

Review | By The Glass – Yvonne Lorkin

“4 stars. The name might be a mashup of Trudi and Susan, daughters of founders Trevor and Marilyn Harch, yet the wine is very much a pure offering. Crafted from shiraz grown in their Eden Valley vineyard by winemaker Joanne Irvine, it has an attractive melon and raspberry razzle on the nose, and a soft, elegantly dry mouthfeel. Plush, lush and licked with peppercorn and soft spices, it’s a fresh, clean rosé with excellent length of flavour.”

A single vineyard wine, from Shiraz grapes on their Eden Valley vineyard in the Barossa, South Australia. A vibrant pale coral pink in the glass. Bright and appetising, perfumed with cherry, raspberry, red apple, nectarine and lilac blossom. Light, juicy and with a crunch of red berries carried on an energetic acidity. A bit more depth and complexity develops over that sumptuous fruit, into notes of candy-apple, allspice, jasmine tea and fuzzy fruit tannins. The finish is balanced and piquant. Very polished and delicious – just the thing for an aperitif or lunchtime tipple.” ~Dec 2022~

The wine starts clean and pure, with nectarine, almond, nashi pear and honey aromatics. Bone dry. Any reservations are discarded – this is a great start! It’s not a tricky wine, kept simple and classic in style. The palate broadens out, moving through a saline acidity into a generous finish, showing a savoury edge of green olive and nori.” ~Sept 2022~

Cue approaching summer days and lazy afternoons with a glass of…well, you can connect the dots with quite a number of smart, well-priced wines out there. On Point pinot grigio definitely belongs in such company. The $20 price tag is more than attractive, so, too, the wine’s strong varietal presence in the glass. Textbook Grigio fresh-cut apple and pear, with an arresting thread of saline and rock pool aromas. Plenty of refreshing crunchy acidity in the glass will satisfy during those lazy afternoons in the sun. Flavours are clean, persistent and there’s even a light, textural mouthfeel running across the palate. Grigio fulfils its role nicely. A tidy wine for summer days ahead. Drink to 2024.”

“It might say ‘pinot grigio’ on the label, but don’t go a-thinkin’ it’s going to be raspy and lean like a lot of them. To us, the On Point is absolutely that. It’s dry, sure, but also totally delicious and generous in our book. Ultra-juicy and bursting with baked apple and nashi, it reflects what the cooler Eden Valley subregion is capable of. Cleansing, succulent, and dangerously drinkable, it’s refreshing, roaring with flavour, softly spiced, and super sexy with roast pumpkin and herb salad.” ~Yvonne Lorkin~
